Golf Course of the Month – The Machrie
Golf has been played at The Machrie since 1891. Designed by Willie Campbell, who proclaimed that it was the finest ground for a golf course that he had ever had the pleasure of viewing. When planning the course, he made it intentionally long by 19th century standards to attract golfers to Islay.
More recently modernised by course architect DJ Russell, The Machrie combines the very best of a traditional, historic links course from a previous age, with a modern Links. The need for thought, imagination and creative shot-making has not changed throughout the years and carries as much of a premium over sheer power now, as it did then, in 1891.
Golf at The Machrie offers enjoyment and a challenge for golfers of all abilities and age and along with the stunning 18-hole Links, there is also the Wee course, which offers six par-3 holes which can be played from a multitude of tees, a 5-bay covered driving range, short game area and the spectacular Hebrides putting course.
A further draw, if one was needed, is The Machrie, Islay’s newest hotel.
Opened in summer 2018, The Machrie has undergone an extensive refurbishment that has lovingly restored the original building and fused it with the striking architecture of the new areas.
Whether on the ground or first floor, all the rooms have unobstructed views of the island’s peat plains, the Mull of Oa or the green of the links and the Atlantic Ocean.
