An Introduction to Ayrshire
Main image: The Royal Troon course.
We find Ayrshire light on sightseeing but rich in golf courses, with three of the six Open Championship Courses in Scotland on this relatively short stretch of coastline. Accommodation is certainly boosted by the Costley Hotel group, the jewel in their collection being Lochgreen House in Troon which has gorgeous rooms and excellent food.
We also use the Piersland House Hotel which is just across the road from Royal Troon. Turnberry in all its grandeur overlooking the majestic Ailsa Course and Ailsa Craig, is an exceptional property which has enjoyed a multi million pound investment making it one of the premier 5 star resorts in the UK.
Prestwick hosted the very first one Open back in 1860 and has remained largely unchanged since then. Troon is rich in courses with the recent host of the Scottish Open, Dundonald close by and the highly rated Western Gailes, as fine a challenge as any.
Sightseeing amounts to the Robert Burns Heritage Trail and the opulent splendour of Culzean Castle, a favourite haunt of President Eisenhower.
